A short course for medical and laboratory personnel, genetic counselors, and policy makers involved in prenatal screening programs

Overview

Applications are now being accepted for this short course offered by the Institute for Preventive Medicine and Medical Screening (IPMMS). This comprehensive 3½ day course covers screening’s 25+ year history, essential statistics, clinical implications, laboratory quality control, comparison of screening methodologies and ancillary testing, legal and ethical implications of screening, and much more. In addition, each short course explores emerging technologies and promising applications of screening to allow attendees to anticipate and prepare for screening enhancements and “next generation” advances.

The 2011 short course will feature discussions on the future of Repeat Measures Testing as well as using cell free fetal DNA as adjuncts to conventional screening approaches.

Who Should Apply

Attendees of the Prenatal Screening: Fundamentals and Innovations short course typically include policy makers (public health, regulatory agencies, insurers), laboratorians (academic and commercial), clinicians, genetic counselors, and others who desire to learn not only of the state of the art of prenatal screening but also of its history and future trending. Course organizers attempt to achieve a “mix” of attendees that represents all of these interests.

Attendance is limited to 40 students. The small class size allows for maximal interaction among course attendees and faculty, and encourages discussion and debate.

Continuing Education

ACCREDITATION
Women and Infants Hospital is accredited by the Rhode Island Medical Society to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION
Women and Infants Hospital designates this educational activity for a maximum of 24 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
GENETIC COUNSELORS
The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) has authorized the Women's and Infants Hospital of Rhode Island and Savjani Institute for Health Research to offer up to 2.6 CEUs or 26.0 contact hours (Category 1) for Prenatal Screening: Fundamentals and Innovations.  The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs earned at this program for the purposes of certification and recertification. (Genetic counselor’s $25 CEU fee is included in course fee)

About IPMMS

The Institute for Preventive Medicine and Medical Screening at the Savjani Institute for Health Research is staffed by members of the Division of Medical Screening and Special Testing, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island. The IPMMS designs, develops, and conducts clinical research studies and as well as analyzes current medical screening practice. In addition, it conducts an Interlaboratory Comparison Program (ICP) for first and second trimester prenatal screening, and provides an opportunity for screening laboratories to monitor and provide feedback on NT measurements provided by outside providers (NTMonitor). The staff at the IPMMS has offered this short course 28 times since 1985 to over 1,000 attendees.
